The Happenstance – Paternoster Square

Paternoster Square sits in the shadow of St Paul's Cathedral, and The Happenstance occupies one of its best positions — a Drake & Morgan bar and restaurant with a terrace that puts the cathedral directly in front of guests rather than somewhere on the horizon. For event planners, the location does much of the selling. The question is whether the venue itself matches the setting, and The Happenstance consistently delivers.

Drake & Morgan's City Flagship

The interior blends modern design with warmth — floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light during daytime events, while the evening atmosphere shifts to something more intimate. The Lounge Bar operates as a genuinely self-contained space with its own entrance, bar, and bathrooms, giving it a privacy level unusual for a bar-restaurant venue. The Private Dining Room adds a more intimate option with AV connectivity for corporate use, and the main bar flows onto the terrace where the cathedral view earns its reputation.

Hire at The Happenstance

The minimum spend model — no hire fee, with spend going toward food and drinks — simplifies budgeting and means more of the budget ends up in the event itself. Modern British event menus, mixology classes, and the option for dry hire with external caterers (including kosher and halal provision) give planners genuine flexibility. A wedding licence for ceremonies of up to 80 means couples can hold everything from vows to reception under one roof.

The St Paul's Backdrop

The terrace is where The Happenstance earns its reputation. Summer evenings and winter nights offer different but equally memorable experiences — the illuminated cathedral against a dark sky is particularly striking. St Paul's station is a two-minute walk, with City Thameslink and Bank close by, making this one of the most accessible premium event locations in the Square Mile.
