About Somerset House

Twelve event spaces inside a Grade I listed neoclassical palace on the Strand — from a fountain courtyard that has hosted London Fashion Week and a Ridley Scott film set, to barrel-vaulted former barge houses on the Thames, to an enigmatic subterranean Deadhouse hidden beneath the quad. Somerset House is London's working arts centre, home to the UK's largest creative community, and the range of what can happen here is genuinely unusual.

Every hire directly funds Somerset House's cultural programme, education, and the maintenance of the Grade I building. It operates as a charity — Somerset House Trust receives no regular public funding — which means the commercial events team approaches each booking with a different energy from a privately owned venue. The relationship between cultural programme and commercial hire runs both ways: clients can enhance events with private tours and exclusive access to current exhibitions.

Somerset House's Indoor Spaces

The Embankment Galleries — spread across the ground floor and mezzanine of the South Wing — are the primary large-scale indoor venue, with 800 standing and dramatic steel-and-glass staircases connecting levels. The West Wing offers a suite of interconnected rooms with period fireplaces and high ceilings, flowing together through spacious corridors for up to 500 standing. The Navy Board Rooms provide four Georgian-era interlinked spaces for up to 100 standing or 60 seated, with marble fireplaces and views across both courtyard and river. The Portico Rooms on the first floor of the South Wing handle similar numbers with uninterrupted London skyline views. The Seamen's Hall — monochrome marble floors, Corinthian columns, floor-to-ceiling Thames views — takes 300 standing or 100 seated.

Fountain Court and the Riverside at Somerset House

The Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court is the centrepiece: 55 choreographed fountains within a neoclassical quad that accommodates up to 3,000 standing. Brand activations, fashion shows, outdoor concerts, and gala receptions use the courtyard as a spectacular canvas — the load-bearing surface supports major temporary builds, stages, and structures. The River Terrace faces the Thames from the South Wing facade, holding 500 standing with Seamen's Hall included as wet weather backup. Together, the outdoor spaces give Somerset House summer event capacity that few central London venues can approach.

Working with Somerset House

Somerset House operates on a dry hire model with an approved caterer list. Event Concept, Create Food, and several other established London caterers are accredited, ensuring a level of quality and familiarity with the building that simplifies logistics. The dedicated events team coordinates hires across the complex, and multi-space configurations — courtyard reception flowing into gallery dinner, or West Wing brand experience combined with River Terrace drinks — are where the venue's versatility becomes most apparent. Temple station is a two-minute walk, with Covent Garden, Embankment, and Waterloo Bridge all nearby.
