Skylon

Skylon takes its name from the cigar-shaped aluminium structure that floated above the South Bank during the 1951 Festival of Britain — a symbol of optimism and modern design that defined a generation. The restaurant channels that mid-century spirit through a triple-height dining room inside the Royal Festival Hall, where floor-to-ceiling windows deliver what is arguably London's best restaurant-level Thames panorama: the London Eye to the west, the City and St Paul's to the east, and the river flowing through the middle of it all.

A Destination Inside a Cultural Landmark

The Royal Festival Hall location means Skylon exists within one of London's most important cultural buildings rather than alongside it. Guests arrive through the Southbank Centre's public spaces, passing the building's Grade I listed foyer before reaching the restaurant on the third floor. For event guests, the journey from street level to table is part of the experience — the architecture, the river views emerging as you ascend, the sense of occasion that the building itself provides. Pre- or post-event, the Southbank Centre's programme of concerts, exhibitions, and performances adds cultural context that most standalone restaurants can't offer.

Two Atmospheres, One Room

The Grand Central Bar splits Skylon into two distinct halves — the restaurant on one side, more formal and focused on the view; the grill on the other, relaxed and suited to informal gatherings. The bar itself, with its striking black porcelain surface, operates as its own destination within the room. This built-in variety means events can use different zones for different energies, from champagne reception at the bar through to seated dinner in the restaurant, without moving between separate spaces.

South Bank Setting

The Waterloo station proximity makes Skylon accessible from across London — Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo, and mainline rail all converge within a two-minute walk. Embankment and Waterloo East are also nearby. The South Bank itself provides a spectacular approach, with the riverside walk, Southbank Centre terraces, and the cultural quarter creating an arrival experience that starts well before guests reach the restaurant door.
