Spaces at One Whitehall Place
2 spaces availableAbout One Whitehall Place
Eight event rooms connected by the largest cantilevered marble staircase in Europe, inside a Grade I listed Victorian building that served as headquarters of the National Liberal Club from 1884. One Whitehall Place carries political heritage that goes beyond decorative — Gladstone founded it, Churchill drank in its bar, five of its members became Prime Minister, and MI5 used the building during both World Wars. The venue now operates alongside the adjoining Royal Horseguards Hotel, which adds 277 bedrooms and five-star service to the event proposition.
The Spaces at One Whitehall Place
The Gladstone Library dominates the second floor: 6.5-metre ceilings, glittering chandeliers, and walls lined floor-to-ceiling with faithful replicas of the 30,000 volumes that once belonged to Gladstone himself. It seats 250 for dinner, holds 350–400 standing, and interlinks directly with the Reading & Writing Room — a space with views over Whitehall Gardens, the Thames, and the London Eye that serves as registration, catering, or reception overflow. Combined, the two rooms handle up to 650 for drinks receptions.
Below the library, the Whitehall Suite occupies the former billiards room on the lower ground floor. Faience-tiled pillars — an 1880s decorative technique by architect Alfred Waterhouse — give it a character entirely distinct from the library above. It functions as the venue's dedicated conferencing facility with exclusive use of the entire lower ground floor, its own cloakroom, kitchen, and adjacent Whitehall Reception that splits into three flexible breakout spaces.
Heritage That Works for Events at One Whitehall Place
Four rooms are licensed for civil ceremonies. Churchill's Bar provides pre-dinner drinks in a space that once watered Asquith and Lloyd George. The River Room and Meston Suite handle intimate functions for up to 70–80 guests with views across Whitehall Gardens. The building was the first in London to install a passenger lift and the first lit entirely by electricity in 1888 — details that add genuine talking points beyond generic period charm.
