Spaces at Grand Junction Paddington

The ceiling alone would justify a visit. Ornate painted panels, rows of stained-glass windows designed in the Gothic Revival tradition, and stonework that ranks among the finest examples of its kind in the country — St Mary Magdalene's Paddington is a building that stops people mid-sentence. A £6 million restoration by the Paddington Development Trust has turned this Grade I* listed church into Grand Junction: a venue where 19th-century architecture meets a modern events operation, set beside the canal in Little Venice.
The Nave and the Undercroft
Two entirely different atmospheres sit on top of each other. The Nave — the main event space — holds 350 theatre, up to 270 for seated dinner, and 400 standing beneath that extraordinary ceiling. Below it, the Undercroft offers vaulted brick ceilings, historic pillars, and candlelit atmosphere for 150 standing or 80 seated. The Chapel of St Sepulchre within the Undercroft served as a film location for Les Misérables and St Trinian's — the kind of space where the stonework creates its own narrative.
The two work together for larger events: arrival drinks in the atmospheric Undercroft, then up into the nave for dinner, dancing, or presentations. Each also hires independently for events that suit their distinct character.
The Garden, The Studio, and the Canal
On the canal side, lawns and a terrace overlooking the Grand Union Canal provide an outdoor reception space that most London church venues simply don't have. The Little Venice setting — houseboats, towpath, tree-lined water — gives summer events a backdrop that feels like leaving the city entirely. The Studio, in the modern extension, offers a bright 30-capacity meeting room with canal views and built-in AV for boardroom meetings, workshops, and away days. The Nest serves as a small meeting room or dressing room for performers.
A Venue With a Purpose
Grand Junction is both a working church (Sunday worship at 9:30am) and a community arts venue hosting concerts, comedy, spoken word, and dance alongside private events. It's run by the Paddington Development Trust as a registered charity — hire revenue funds community programmes and building restoration. That gives events here a context that commercial venues can't offer: guests enjoy a remarkable space while contributing to its preservation.
Catering is provided by Bovingdons, with dry hire flexibility for events wanting alternative arrangements. The venue is licensed for weddings and civil ceremonies, with packages starting from around £149 per person. The alcohol licence runs until 11pm with extensions available, and all spaces are wheelchair accessible. Paddington station is a ten-minute walk away, with Warwick Avenue and Royal Oak tube stations even closer.
