German Gymnasium

German Gymnasium is a surprising venue for events near King's Cross. German Gymnasium is a recently opened venue in the regenerated heart of Kings Cross. This amazing building was Britain’s first purpose-built gym and was the site for the indoor events at the first Olympic Games, held in London back in 1866. Long forgotten sports were practised here, including Indian club swinging and broadsword practice as well as the introduction of women’s exercise which was considered to be a forward-thinking approach at the time! The vast laminated timber roof trusses, with their original cast iron hooks from which budding Olympians swung from ropes, are still in place today. Sitting in a prime spot between King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations, the most exciting emerging area of London in terms of new development, this beautiful Grade II listed building has now been restored to its former glory.
