About Freud Museum London

When Sigmund Freud fled Vienna in 1938, he brought his entire study with him — the couch, the antiquities, the books, the desk — and recreated it in a red-brick Hampstead house on Maresfield Gardens. Anna Freud lived and practised here until 1982, after which the house opened as a museum. The study remains exactly as Freud arranged it, and that preservation is what makes the venue unlike anything else in London's events landscape.

This isn't a themed venue or a building with "heritage character." It's the real thing — over 2,000 objects collected across a lifetime, arranged by one of the most influential minds of the 20th century, in the rooms where he actually used them. Events happen around this collection, not in spite of it.

A domestic scale

The museum's event capacity reflects its origins as a family home. The garden takes up to 100 standing with marquee and heating available, while the Video Room seats 40 for presentations and screenings. These aren't grand spaces — they're domestic ones, and that intimacy is the point. A reception in the garden feels like being invited to someone's home in Hampstead, because that's exactly what it is.

The combination works well as an evening format: drinks and canapes in the garden with the house open for guests to explore, followed by a talk or screening in the Video Room. The study is accessible throughout — guests encounter Freud's couch and collection as a natural part of moving through the building.

Hampstead setting, central London reach

Maresfield Gardens sits in one of London's most desirable residential streets, surrounded by mature trees and period architecture. It feels deliberately removed from the city's event circuit — which is precisely its value for hires that want something quieter, more considered, and more memorable than another hotel function room. Finchley Road station is ten minutes on foot, connecting to the Metropolitan, Jubilee, and Overground lines for easy access from central London. Hire fees contribute directly to the museum's conservation and education work.
