The Business Design Centre began life in 1862 as the Royal Agricultural Hall — a Victorian exhibition space built at a scale that London still struggles to match outside purpose-built modern facilities. Now Grade II listed and extensively modernised, it houses 22,000 square metres of event space in Islington, hosting over 80 exhibitions and 250 conferences annually. The original ironwork and barrel-vaulted roof survive as architectural features that give the building its character; the infrastructure underneath is thoroughly contemporary and purpose-built for professional event production.
Exhibition Halls and Conference Centre at the Business Design Centre
The Mezzanine — 2,000 square metres of column-free space beneath a 16.5-metre vaulted ceiling — anchors the venue's large-event capability. It handles exhibitions requiring unobstructed floor plates, conferences for 1,500 theatre, gala dinners for 1,456 seated, and awards ceremonies where the Victorian architecture provides visual drama that reduces reliance on production spend. Natural daylight through the barrel vault creates exhibition conditions that windowless halls simply cannot achieve.
The Gallery Hall provides a more contained 840-square-metre alternative, with the 550-square-metre Atrium level overlooking from above. Together they handle medium-scale exhibitions, conferences with breakout requirements, and awards dinners for 450 cabaret. Eight Conference Centre rooms (A through H, each 50–250 theatre) sit adjacent for syndicate sessions. A dedicated 500-seat Auditorium with retractable tiered seating and blackout facilities adds a formal presentation space to the mix.
What Sets the Business Design Centre Apart
Three things distinguish the BDC from London's other large-event venues. The column-free Mezzanine at exhibition scale with genuine architectural character — most venues this size are functional boxes designed for throughput, not atmosphere. The Islington N1 location: Angel station five minutes' walk, King's Cross ten, making it substantially more accessible than out-of-centre exhibition venues for audiences arriving from central London. And purpose-built exhibition infrastructure — loading bays, power throughout, rigging points, cargo lift access — designed for professional event production rather than adapted from hospitality stock.
The BDC is the UK's first CarbonNeutral venue. Two hundred and fifty on-site car parking spaces serve exhibitor logistics. An adjacent Hilton hotel supports multi-day events. In-house catering and in-house AV keep supplier coordination within the building. The family-owned operation has built a reputation that sees corporate clients and exhibition organisers return year after year — the consistency of service and operational knowledge that comes from a team that runs 330+ events annually in the same building.
