About Burgh House & Hampstead Museum
Burgh House is Grade I listed — a distinction shared by fewer than 2.5% of listed buildings nationally, and a rarity even in Hampstead. Built in 1704 as a Queen Anne house on New End Square, it survived a potential closure in the 1970s when a local campaign supported by figures including Melvyn Bragg and Judi Dench helped establish the Burgh House Trust. Today it operates as Hampstead Museum and a self-funding charity venue — every event booking directly supports keeping a 300-year-old building open and free to the public.
The Music Room
The principal event space seats up to 62 for dinner or holds 80 to 100 for a standing reception. Georgian stripped pine panelling — reclaimed in the 1920s from the original Hampstead Spa long room — lines the walls, and a 1925 baby grand Blüthner piano sits in the bow window. French doors open to a private courtyard for summer events. The room is licensed for wedding ceremonies, and the combination of period character, acoustic warmth from the panelling, and the intimacy of the scale makes it one of Hampstead's most distinctive ceremony and reception rooms.
The Library
A smaller space seating up to 20, panelled in olive green with the feel of a private study. The Library suits intimate dinners, board meetings, and ceremonies for very small groups. The character is quiet and bookish — a different register entirely from the Music Room.
Peggy Jay Gallery
The gallery offers a more modern, white-walled space for exhibitions and receptions. Combined with the Music Room and Library, the three spaces accommodate up to 110 standing or 72 seated across the building, giving event planners flexibility to use the venue's distinct rooms for different stages of an evening.
A Hampstead Village Venue
A dedicated in-house catering team operates on-site. The building is available Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday from 10am to 10:30pm, with other days from 5pm. The licence runs to 10:30pm. Hampstead tube station is within walking distance — the venue sits in the village proper, surrounded by the residential streets and independent character that define the area. The original grand staircase, fireplaces, and panelling throughout the house provide backdrop without requiring any dressing. The garden with outside seating is available for pre-dinner drinks and summer receptions.
