About Room 30 at The National Gallery
Room 30 houses the National Gallery’s most celebrated Spanish paintings — Velázquez’s The Rokeby Venus among them — in a space that manages to feel both grand and warm. The rich tones of the Old Masters, the room’s proportions, and its position within the Gallery create something that reads less like a function room and more like a private evening inside one of the world’s great collections. Which, of course, is exactly what it is.
But what sets Room 30 apart from the Gallery’s other hireable spaces isn’t just the art on the walls. It’s the arrival.
The Arrival Sequence at the National Gallery’s Room 30
Guests enter through the Portico entrance on Trafalgar Square, cross the Mosaic Terrace — Boris Anrep’s celebrated floor featuring figures from 1930s Britain — pass through Central Hall beneath its domed glass ceiling, and arrive into Room 30. The journey from street to event space builds through some of the most impressive architecture in London, and it’s all part of the hire. No other venue in the city offers an arrival route that passes through a mosaic artwork, a glass-domed hall, and the world’s most visited paintings before guests reach their table. For events using a reception-then-dinner format, this sequence works beautifully. Pre-dinner drinks on the Portico Terrace or in Central Hall, then the transition into Room 30 for the main event — each stage a different setting, each more impressive than the last.Capacity and Event Formats in Room 30
The room takes 300 standing for receptions or 220 for seated dinners. Corporate entertaining and prestige client events are the sweet spot — the Spanish masterpieces provide a conversation piece that no amount of event design could manufacture. The Rokeby Venus alone gives guests something to talk about that isn’t the quarterly results. Gala dinners, awards ceremonies, and wedding receptions all work well. The warm tones of the Spanish collection create an atmosphere that’s rich without being overwhelming, and the room’s position near Central Hall means overflow and break-out options are readily available.Multi-Space Flow and Practical Details at the National Gallery
Room 30 connects to the Barry Rooms for larger events requiring two dining or reception spaces. The Portico Terrace is accessible via Central Hall for summer outdoor elements, and Annenberg Court handles after-party requirements. Gallery tours into adjacent rooms — including the Impressionist galleries — can be incorporated as evening add-ons. Catering is managed exclusively in-house by Peyton Events, with dedicated AV technicians and an event coordinator included in every hire. The alcohol licence extends to 2am, spaces are available from 18:00 on weekday evenings, and cloakroom, security, and cleaning are all covered within the hire charge. The same event-type restrictions apply as across the Gallery — no politically affiliated events, no arts-sector charity fundraising.Room 30 Capacity & Layouts
