About Inner Temple Hall at The Inner Temple

One of the very few Georgian-style event halls surviving in the City of London, Inner Temple Hall occupies the first floor of a working Inn of Court where barristers have trained and dined for over six centuries. The distinction matters: this isn’t heritage set-dressing or a building trading on its past. The legal profession still uses this Hall daily, and events happen within that living context rather than alongside a gift shop and audio guide.

Inner Temple Hall — The Space

Oak-panelled walls carry heraldic shields and historic paintings. Silvered chandeliers hang from the ceiling. A minstrels’ gallery overlooks the room from above. Large stained-glass windows — genuinely large, not token panes — fill the Hall with natural light during the day and create a more dramatic, ceremonial atmosphere once evening falls. The overall impression is of understated opulence: dignified without being oppressive, grand without trying to impress. The proportions suit both 400-person receptions and more intimate dinners where the room’s character wraps around a smaller gathering rather than overwhelming it.

Inner Temple Hall — Capacities and Configurations

Standing receptions take 400. Dinner on straight tables seats 240 to 276 depending on configuration. Dinner and dance fits 240 with a dance floor transformation handled by the venue’s events team. Theatre layout accommodates 270, with a PA system and microphone included. Wedding ceremonies seat 255 — the Hall is licensed. The range is unusually broad for a historic space, where listed building constraints often limit flexibility. Availability runs midweek evenings and all day on weekends.

Events in Inner Temple Hall

Formal dinners and banquets are what the Hall was built for, and the Georgian grandeur combined with Searcys’ fine dining catering makes this a natural choice for occasions where the venue needs to do heavy atmospheric lifting. Award ceremonies and presentations use the theatre configuration and PA — the minstrels’ gallery adds visual drama that a standard stage-and-lectern setup can’t replicate. Conferences and lectures benefit from the same infrastructure in a setting that sustains attention more effectively than a hotel ballroom. Corporate entertaining gains instant gravitas from the legal heritage and architectural quality, whether or not the guests have any connection to the law. Christmas dinners and parties land particularly well here — the candlelit formality of a winter evening in an oak-panelled Hall is hard to manufacture elsewhere.

Inner Temple Hall — Connecting Spaces

The Hall sits on the first floor, connected by a main corridor to all other first-floor event spaces. The Parliament Chamber — fine oak panelling, Grinling Gibbons carving around the fireplace, a grand piano, 200 standing or 96 for dinner — works as an elegant reception space before Hall dinners. The Luncheon Room interconnects both the Hall and Parliament Chamber, taking 120 standing or 65 for dinner — ideal for pre-dinner drinks or a catering breakout. The Drawing Room offers intimate gatherings with garden views. On the ground floor, the Pegasus Bar & Restaurant seats 50 and is available for weekend hire. The fourth floor houses eight contemporary meeting rooms with a shared breakout space, viewing balcony, and a 120-seat tiered Lecture Theatre with its own private breakout area. Lift access is available throughout.

Catering and Location at The Inner Temple

Searcys provides all catering in-house, with bespoke menus tailored to each event and all dietary requirements accommodated. The Inner Temple sits in London’s legal quarter between Temple and Blackfriars stations — a quiet oasis that surprises guests expecting the noise and density of a central London postcode. The three acres of award-winning gardens that surround the buildings are visible from many of the event spaces and available for summer events from May onwards.
