About The Porter Tun at The Brewery
An exposed King Post timber roof spanning 60 feet above 778 square metres of antique wooden floor — built in 1782 as part of the Whitbread brewing empire, and now one of the largest and oldest unobstructed event spaces in London. The Porter Tun doesn’t just offer scale; it offers scale with genuine architectural presence. The massive timber roof structure overhead, the vast open floor below, and natural daylight flooding the space create an impact that modern conference centres and hotel ballrooms simply cannot match.
The Porter Tun at The Brewery — Architecture and Atmosphere
Everything about this room is designed around that roof. The King Post timber structure gives a 60-foot clear span with no columns interrupting sight lines or floor plans — a practical advantage for conferences, exhibitions, and events requiring flexible staging. The antique wooden floor is original, and the whole space is Grade II listed. A large raised balcony adds a dramatic second level, working as a reception platform, VIP area, or presentation gallery depending on the event format. Below, the main floor accommodates up to 900–1,000 standing or 900 theatre-style. Dining reaches 700 guests, with cabaret for 450–580 and classroom setups for 390–456. These are genuine capacities — the room’s proportions match the numbers without cramming. State-of-the-art sound and fully integrated LED lighting run throughout. The space is fully air-controlled with natural daylight, and the in-house Encore AV team manages technical production on-site. Hanging points are built into the roof structure for additional lighting and rigging.Major Events in The Porter Tun
The combination of scale, heritage character, and production-ready infrastructure makes this room a natural fit for prestigious events that need both capacity and atmosphere. Government conferences, large-scale award ceremonies, star-studded charity galas, fashion shows, and exhibitions have all used The Porter Tun — the kind of events where the venue itself needs to make a statement. Conferences and plenaries work particularly well at this scale. The unobstructed floor plan means flexible staging, the balcony provides an elevated perspective, and the Malt Room is available as a dedicated green room. For fashion shows and catwalk events, the room’s elongated proportions and dramatic overhead structure create a processional quality that purpose-built venues often lack. Large-scale Christmas parties are a strength too — The Brewery runs immersive themed experiences each December, using both the Porter Tun and connecting spaces. Past themes have transformed the venue into fully produced environments rather than standard party packages. Weddings at this scale are rare but memorable. The 18th-century brewing heritage and the timber roof structure create an atmosphere that photographs dramatically and gives guests something to talk about beyond the standard reception. How The Porter Tun Connects to The Brewery Complex
The Porter Tun is the centrepiece of The Brewery’s six-room complex, but it rarely operates in isolation. The King George III Room connects at ground level and most commonly serves as drinks reception, catering base, or exhibition area for Porter Tun events. The Malt Room functions as a green room. Queen Charlotte, Sugar Rooms, Smeaton Vaults, and the James Watt Room provide additional breakout and meeting space for larger programmes. During summer months, the 18th-century cobbled courtyard transforms into The Retreat with two marquees — adding up to 800 additional capacity for events that want indoor-outdoor flow. That courtyard sits at the heart of the complex, surrounded by the indoor spaces, making transitions seamless. The Brewery operates as a wet-hire venue with in-house catering — an award-winning kitchen team producing seasonal British menus. No external caterers, but an operation with fifty-plus years of events experience and industry recognition for food and beverage quality. Five minutes’ walk from Liverpool Street, Moorgate, and Barbican stations. The Porter Tun Capacity & Layouts
