About Thames Rowing Club
Thames Rowing Club is one of the UK’s oldest rowing clubs, founded in 1860 with a Victorian clubhouse on Putney Embankment that was renovated in 2011 to combine modern event facilities with 160 years of genuine rowing heritage. Full venue hire includes the Great Hall, Bar, Fairbairn Room, and access to the river-facing balcony — accommodating 300 standing, 150 for seated dining, and 100 in cabaret arrangement.
The venue is licensed for civil ceremonies, making it one of Putney’s few riverside wedding-licensed spaces where couples can hold both ceremony and reception in the same building with Thames views throughout.
The Great Hall
The centrepiece of the hire, the Great Hall features six-metre high ceilings and French doors that open directly onto a balcony overlooking the Thames and Putney Bridge. The height and proportions give the room a sense of occasion that lower-ceilinged function rooms can’t replicate, while the river views through the French doors provide a natural focal point for both ceremony and dining layouts. The hall handles seated dinners for up to 150, standing receptions for 300, and cabaret arrangements for 100.The Fairbairn Room and Bar
The Fairbairn Room offers a smaller, more intimate space with river views and direct bar access — well suited to private dining, breakout meetings, or as a secondary space during larger events. During weddings, it works as a drinks reception area while the Great Hall is turned around from ceremony to dinner. The Bar area is included in venue hire and provides an additional social space with the club’s rowing photographs and memorabilia creating conversation points throughout.Heritage and Character at Thames Rowing Club
The walls throughout the venue are decorated with rowing photographs and memorabilia spanning from the 1860s to the present day — Olympic medals, club regatta history, and the accumulated records of over 160 years of competitive rowing. This isn’t curated event décor; it’s the genuine archive of a working rowing club, and the authenticity registers differently from manufactured heritage. The 2011 renovation preserved this character while creating light, modern event spaces — the Great Hall in particular balances contemporary functionality with Victorian architectural proportions. The Boat Race connection adds context for corporate audiences. The Championship Course runs past the clubhouse, and the Putney Embankment location carries associations with one of London’s most recognised annual sporting events.Catering and Practicalities
Thames Rowing Club offers a recommended caterers list, or event organisers can hire the kitchen separately and bring in their own caterers — genuine flexibility that dry hire venues don’t always provide alongside the option of experienced recommendations. Round tables (for 8 or 10 guests) and chairs are included in the venue hire. The balcony is the standout feature for summer events — French doors open directly from the Great Hall to the riverside, with views over the Thames and towards Putney Bridge. For winter events, the Great Hall’s proportions and ceiling height create their own sense of occasion without relying on the outdoor space.Getting to Thames Rowing Club
Putney Bridge tube station on the District Line is approximately ten minutes’ walk. On-street parking surrounds the venue, with free parking available after 18:30 on Saturdays. The Putney Embankment location means arrivals along the river path, with the rowing club atmosphere beginning from the approach rather than just inside the door.Capacity at Thames Rowing Club
