About Livery Hall at Stationers' Hall & Garden

The Livery Hall at Stationers’ Hall is the largest space in one of the City of London’s last remaining ancient Livery Halls — completed in 1673 after the Great Fire, Grade I listed, with exclusive hire of the entire venue included as standard. Booking the Livery Hall means you also get the Court Room, Stock Room, Charter Room, and the secluded Garden with its 200-year-old London Plane tree.

Stationers’ Livery Hall — Character and Atmosphere

This is a room built for ceremony. Carved oak panelling lines the walls, time-aged and rich with armorial banners of past Masters of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. Gleaming light oak flooring catches the light from jewel-like stained glass windows — floodlit in the evening to cast warm, atmospheric colour across the space. The St Cecilia window, patron saint of music and musicians, is particularly striking. Candles are permitted throughout the Hall. This is rare in heritage venues — many prohibit open flames entirely — and the effect on evening events is significant. The combination of candlelight, stained glass, and carved oak creates an atmosphere that is baronial without being sombre: grand enough for black-tie dinners and awards ceremonies, warm enough that guests feel the room rather than simply admiring it.

Capacity and Layouts at the Livery Hall

Standing reception capacity is 400 guests across the full venue. Seated dining accommodates 205 on a top-table-and-sprigs layout, or 150 on round tables — the sprigs layout makes better use of the Hall’s proportions and works well for formal dinners with a head table. Theatre style seats 200, supported by in-house AV through Eclipse including PA throughout the venue. A baby grand piano is available for a small additional fee. These are venue-wide figures — hiring the Livery Hall means exclusive use of every space, so events can distribute guests across rooms rather than concentrating everyone in the Hall itself. The interlinking layout creates natural event flow: a reception in the Garden or Court Room, dinner in the Livery Hall, dancing in the Stock Room. The transition between phases happens organically as guests move through connected spaces. The Court Room, with its Rococo gold ornamentation and ornate Grinling Gibbons mantelpiece, works beautifully for ceremony settings — it overlooks the Garden and connects to it via a decorative wrought iron staircase.

What Works in Stationers’ Livery Hall

Black-tie dinners and awards ceremonies are the obvious fit. The stained glass, candlelight, and carved oak deliver gravitas that no styled or themed venue can match — this is centuries of genuine heritage, not period decoration applied to a modern shell. Corporate dinners, charity galas, and annual general meetings all benefit from the setting’s institutional weight and prestige. Conferences and presentations seat 200 theatre-style with the in-house Eclipse AV package. The Court Room provides a natural breakout space for smaller sessions, and the Stock Room handles refreshments. Weddings benefit from the ceremony licence — available seven days a week — and the progression from Court Room ceremony through to Livery Hall reception and Garden drinks. Product launches, exhibitions, roadshows, and fashion shows use the Hall as a backdrop that photographs exceptionally well. The architectural detail, the stained glass, the proportions of the room — all add production value that exists in the venue rather than needing to be built.

Practical Considerations at Stationers’ Hall

The 2021 refurbishment added air cooling and full accessibility throughout — significant upgrades for a Grade I listed building that remove two common objections to heritage venue hire. High-speed Wi-Fi is available. Approved external caterers are accepted from a curated list, giving flexibility over the menu while ensuring quality within the historic setting. Cloakroom facilities are included. Events run 8am to 10pm — the venue sits within an almshouse community, so late-night extensions are not available. For events needing to run past 10pm, this is a genuine constraint. But for daytime conferences, afternoon weddings, corporate dinners, and evening receptions with a defined finish, the timing works well — and the early end can be a positive for weeknight corporate events where guests appreciate not being kept until midnight. St Paul’s station is two minutes on foot. Blackfriars and City Thameslink are equally close, and the venue’s proximity to the Millennium Bridge and River Thames makes post-event dispersal straightforward.
