About Spitalfields Venue
Spitalfields Venue brings together two Grade I listed buildings — Nicholas Hawksmoor’s Christ Church Spitalfields and the adjacent Hanbury Hall — under a single events operation on the border of the City and East London. The Nave alone handles 600 for a standing reception, making this one of the larger blank canvas venues in central London, but the real proposition is the range: Baroque grandeur, a modernised Crypt conference space, and a Huguenot heritage hall each offer a completely different setting within the same site.
The venue operates as a dry hire space with an approved caterer list, giving event planners creative control while ensuring catering quality is maintained. Liverpool Street station is five minutes away, with Aldgate East and Shoreditch High Street Overground equally close.
The Nave at Christ Church Spitalfields
Hawksmoor completed Christ Church in 1729, and the Nave remains one of London’s most striking interior spaces. Tuscan columns, mezzanine galleries, and clerestory windows create a sense of scale and light that few venues can match — up to 600 standing, 350 theatre-style, or around 270 for a seated dinner. Chandeliers and the original Baroque detailing provide the atmosphere, while modern production capabilities handle lighting, sound, and staging. As a blank canvas space, the Nave works for events that need architectural drama without a fixed layout. Gala dinners, fashion shows, award ceremonies, product launches, filming, and wedding receptions all benefit from a room where the architecture does much of the design work. The space is fully accessible with wheelchair access throughout.Spitalfields Venue’s Crypt — Conference Space Below the Church
The Crypt sits directly below the Nave and is a genuine surprise. Recently redesigned, it combines the original stone foundations with modern light oak panelling and underfloor heating, creating a space that’s surprisingly bright and airy rather than the dark vaulted room the name suggests. Soundproof folding walls let it function as one large reception space for 200 standing, an intimate dinner setting, or two separate conference rooms. For corporate events, the Crypt handles all-day conferences for up to 60 delegates in classroom format, with AV facilities built in. Used alongside the Nave — dinner upstairs, after-party or DJ set down in the Crypt — the two spaces create a natural progression through the evening.Hanbury Hall and Supporting Spaces at Spitalfields Venue
Hanbury Hall brings its own distinct character. Built in 1719 as a French Huguenot church, the building hosted Charles Dickens’ public readings and the 1888 Match Girls’ Strike meeting — history that gives the space genuine narrative weight for events that value cultural provenance. High ceilings, large windows, and natural daylight make it versatile, with a mezzanine that works for gallery-style receptions or pre-dinner drinks. Full AV and projector facilities are included. The Old Vestry Room provides additional breakout capacity, hireable independently or alongside the Nave. Together, the combined spaces give Spitalfields Venue genuine programming depth — large-scale receptions in the Nave, conferences in the Crypt, intimate gatherings in Hanbury Hall, and breakout space in the Vestry Room.Blank Canvas Events at Spitalfields Venue
Dry hire with approved caterers means event planners can shape menus and service style while relying on catering partners who know the building’s logistics. Production capabilities cover the key spaces, and the Spitalfields location bridges City corporate culture with East London’s creative energy — a combination that appeals to organisations wanting something with more edge than a Mayfair hotel ballroom. Alcohol licence runs until 23:30 with extensions available.Capacity at Spitalfields Venue
