About Main Hall at MOTH Club

The glitter ceiling sells it. Gold and sparkling, stretching across the Main Hall of a former military veterans’ club in Hackney, it’s the kind of feature that makes every photo taken here look like it was styled on purpose. MOTH Club has been part of the Hackney Central landscape since 1972 — originally the General Browning MOTH Club, a meeting point for the Memorable Order of Tin Hats, a South African military veterans’ network. Reopened to the public in 2015 under the team behind Shacklewell Arms, The Lock Tavern, and The Adam & Eve, the hall now holds 300 standing or 150 seated beneath that ceiling, carrying decades of working men’s club character that no amount of interior design budget could replicate.

MOTH Club’s Main Hall — Character That Isn’t Manufactured

The refurbishment by LNZRT kept the bones: original paraphernalia from the working men’s club era, eclectic vintage décor, and an atmosphere that reads as accumulated rather than curated. The hall is run by Military of the Heavens, a local Hackney charity, which gives it a community rootedness that purely commercial venues lack. Lady Gaga, Christine and the Queens, Caroline Polachek, and Connan Mockasin have all played here — it catches artists on the way up, and that programming reputation transfers into the room’s energy even on private hire nights. The stage comes equipped with a full professional PA system and DJ setup. External DJs are permitted, and the venue can provide both bands and DJs if required. Projection capabilities cover presentations or visual elements for parties. A cloakroom and fully stocked bar are standard, and the venue holds a late licence for events that need to run past standard hours.

Events in the MOTH Club Main Hall

At 300 standing, the hall is large enough for a proper party but compact enough that it never feels half-empty at 150. That sweet spot makes it work across formats: birthdays and milestone celebrations, wedding receptions with character instead of convention, creative industry launches, drinks receptions, comedy nights, cabaret, and corporate events that want to feel anything but corporate. Bingo nights, quizzes, and themed club nights are part of the regular programming DNA here, and private events benefit from that same willingness to be playful with format. Film and photo shoots are a particular draw — the interior is genuinely photogenic from every angle, with enough visual texture that professional styling becomes optional rather than essential. Themed parties and club nights benefit from the same quality: the room does atmospheric heavy lifting that blank canvas spaces demand you build from scratch. Food events work well in the space, and the fully stocked bar handles everything from craft beer to cocktails without needing outside suppliers.

Beyond the Main Hall at MOTH Club

The Main Hall is the primary hireable space, but ancillary areas extend the offering. A traditional member’s bar provides a distinct atmosphere for breakout drinks or smaller pre-event gatherings — the feel is completely different from the Main Hall, more intimate and pub-like. A hidden drinking den within the venue adds another layer for guests to discover during the evening. Extra rooms support breakout sessions or green room requirements, keeping production logistics separate from the guest experience.

Hackney Central Location

Valette Street sits yards from Hackney Town Hall, three minutes from Hackney Central Overground. The E9 postcode puts you in the centre of Hackney’s evening economy — the neighbourhood extends the experience for guests arriving early or continuing afterward, with Mare Street’s restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. Bethnal Green on the Central line is around 15 minutes on foot, and Liverpool Street and Stratford provide easy onward connections for guests coming from across London. The venue operates from 5pm to 1am daily for private hires.
