About Jamyang Buddhist Centre
Jamyang Buddhist Centre occupies a Grade II listed Victorian courthouse built in 1869, now home to a Tibetan Buddhist community and one of London’s most unusual event hires. The Old Courtroom — the venue’s largest space — retains its original iron-framed windows and timber floors beneath high ceilings, accommodating 40 to 50 in theatre format or over 80 standing. This is a daytime venue with significant restrictions, but for events that suit its contemplative character — mindfulness retreats, academic symposia, charity receptions, book launches, board away days — it offers an atmosphere that purpose-built conference spaces cannot replicate.
The centre has been an active Buddhist monastery since 1995, with a residential monastic community on site. That context is not just background — it shapes the atmosphere of every room in the building and defines what events work here.
The Old Courtroom
The principal hire space. The original courtroom architecture delivers dramatic proportions — high ceilings, tall iron-framed windows filling the room with natural light, and timber flooring that gives the space a warmth unusual for a room of this scale. Theatre-style events for 40 to 50 guests work particularly well here, with the room’s natural focal point where the judge’s bench once stood providing a stage-like presence for speakers. Standing receptions for larger groups use the full floor area, and the courtroom’s inherent gravitas suits formal daytime events, academic presentations, and gatherings where the setting should quietly command attention without needing elaborate production. The Tara Room, Library, and Courtyard
The Tara Room provides a more intimate alternative — capacity for around 35, with a period fireplace and triple sash windows creating a warm, self-contained space for smaller meetings, workshops, or breakout sessions. The proportions feel domestic rather than institutional, which suits facilitated discussions and creative working sessions. The Library holds 20 for small meetings or quiet working sessions — useful as a secondary space alongside larger events in the courtroom or Tara Room. The café and courtyard area accommodates 35, with the venue’s award-winning café providing catering and the outdoor courtyard garden offering fresh air and informal gathering space during breaks. For retreats and day-long events, the combination of indoor spaces and courtyard creates a natural rhythm of focus and relaxation. Meditation rooms are available as breakout spaces, which adds a genuinely distinctive option for wellness-focused events, corporate retreats, and mindfulness programmes. These are working meditation spaces, not repurposed meeting rooms.Restrictions and Hire Terms at Jamyang
The restrictions here are substantial and non-negotiable. No alcohol. No loud music. No smoking. No late-night events — daytime hire only, with slots running from 9am to 5pm in half-day or full-day formats. A residential monastic community lives on site, and all events must respect that environment. These constraints filter out most evening socials and celebrations, but they also mean the venue attracts a particular kind of event — and for that kind of event, the setting is exceptional. In-house catering is available through the venue’s café, which has won recognition in its own right. The centre is located at The Old Courthouse, 43 Renfrew Road, London SE11 4NA, between Elephant & Castle and Kennington tube stations. Both stations are a short walk, making the venue accessible from most parts of central and South London.Capacity at Jamyang Buddhist Centre
