About The Nave at Hackney Church
The central space of St John at Hackney — a Grade II* listed church restored in 2022 by minimalist architect John Pawson CBE alongside visual artist Es Devlin. The Nave holds 1,750 standing or 550 seated beneath soaring ceilings and huge windows that flood the interior with natural sunlight. A state-of-the-art d&b audio system and industry-standard lighting provisions make this a concert-ready venue that has hosted Ed Sheeran, Biffy Clyro, Lianne La Havas, James Bay, Robert Glasper, and Japanese Breakfast.
The Nave at Hackney Church — Architecture and Atmosphere
Pawson’s restoration created something unusual: ecclesiastical drama without ecclesiastical clutter. The space has been described as a cathedral of creativity — stripped back to reveal the building’s proportions while adding a contemporary minimalism that amplifies rather than competes with the architecture. The Nave measures 19.5 metres wide between columns and 30 metres wide wall to wall, with over 20 metres from front-of-house to the stage edge and nearly 27 metres to the back of the stage. Those dimensions are concert-hall scale in a setting that feels nothing like a concert hall. Huge windows allow natural light to shift through the space across the day, which means daytime events and evening events feel genuinely different in the same room. The Nave has featured in music videos for NAO, Labrinth, Griff, Koffee, and Cliff Richard — a testament to how well the space photographs and films.Events in the Nave at Hackney Church
Live concerts and music events are the obvious strength — the d&b sound system and acoustic qualities are purpose-built for performance. But the Nave works equally well for events that need dramatic scale without a permanent stage setup: awards ceremonies for several hundred, seated dinners for up to 300, film shoots that need architectural backdrop and controllable light, immersive art installations, fashion shows, and brand activations where the space itself becomes part of the experience. Two bespoke bars are installed at the rear of the Nave on the ground floor, with a temporary bar operating on the first-floor balcony during larger events. The balcony provides an elevated vantage point for guests who want to watch from above — particularly effective during performances and awards presentations. Wedding receptions at this scale gain from architecture designed for congregation: the proportions feel right for celebration in a way that function rooms and hotel ballrooms rarely achieve. The Nave — Production and Practical Details
Back-of-house rooms — The Library, Study, and Box Room — provide green rooms, production offices, and VIP rest areas adjacent to the main space. On-site catering facilities and fully stocked bars mean the operational infrastructure is already in place. Large parking facilities accommodate 20-plus vehicles, with a public car park also nearby. A cargo lift handles equipment load-in, and guest kitchen facilities support external production teams. Full disabled access includes a ground-floor access area near the stage. The Nave operates as a cashless venue. The standard alcohol licence runs until 23:00, with temporary event notice extensions possible for events under 499 persons. Hackney Central Overground is five minutes’ walk from the venue on Lower Clapton Road, E5.The Nave Capacity & Layouts
