About German Gymnasium

German Gymnasium is Britain’s first purpose-built gymnasium, dating to 1865 and the site of indoor events at London’s first Olympic Games in 1866. The Grade II listed building now operates as a restaurant and event venue with a 57-foot floor-to-ceiling height, original laminated timber roof trusses — one of only two surviving examples in London — and cast iron hooks still hanging from the beams where Victorian gymnasts once trained. Full venue hire accommodates 500 standing (600 in summer with the heated terrace), with seated dining for 250 across the two floors. The building won ‘Most Beautiful Restaurant in the World’ at the 2016 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, and it’s easy to see why. The restoration preserved the gymnasium’s extraordinary proportions and structural character while creating a contemporary dining environment across two levels — the Grand Café at ground floor with its vast outdoor terrace on Pancras Square, and the upper floor restaurant with Meister Bar and semi-private dining space.

Event Spaces at German Gymnasium

The Upper Floor can be hired exclusively with its own private entrance. The restaurant, Meister Bar, and semi-private dining room combine for 250 standing or 150 seated — a self-contained event space with views up into the spectacular timber roof structure. The Meister Bar occupies a mezzanine position beneath the grand vaulted ceiling, serving cocktails inspired by German national parks alongside the venue’s own KX Pilsner, brewed exclusively for German Gymnasium. The Semi-Private Dining area seats 32 at a bespoke table designed to complement the building’s original features, with natural daylight during the day and intimate low-key lighting in the evening. At 45 standing or 32 seated, it provides a self-contained space for private dinners, board meetings, and smaller celebrations within the larger venue. The Balcony overlooks the Grand Café below and holds 30 for standing receptions — a dramatic perch for pre-dinner drinks, with views across the double-height interior. The venue’s innovative cocktail programme includes Le Whaf, a multisensory carafe that vaporises cocktails into dramatic clouds. For the largest events, exclusive hire of the entire venue — both floors plus the heated outdoor terrace — handles 500–800 guests. The Grand Café’s terrace on Pancras Square extends capacity during warmer months and provides an outdoor drinks reception space in one of King’s Cross’s most attractive public squares.

Events That Suit German Gymnasium

The architectural drama serves events without creating the formality that many heritage venues impose. The building is grand but approachable — the soaring ceiling and timber trusses provide wow factor while the contemporary restaurant fit-out keeps the atmosphere accessible. Corporate receptions, dinner dances, celebrations, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and business breakfasts all work within a space that’s versatile enough to shift between formal and social across the course of an evening. Client entertaining benefits from the building’s talking-point factor. The Olympic history, the original iron hooks, the timber roof — guests engage with the venue’s story naturally, providing conversation that moves beyond business without forced activity.

Dining at German Gymnasium

The kitchen serves Mittel-European cuisine — schnitzels, sausages, seasonal specialities, and tortes — with a wine list showcasing German, Austrian, and Hungarian labels including Sekt, authentic German sparkling wine. An extensive draught and bottled beer selection anchors around KX Pilsner. In-house catering means the food and service are delivered by a team that knows the building intimately.

King’s Cross Location

German Gymnasium sits on King’s Boulevard between King’s Cross and St Pancras stations — two minutes from both.
