About Church House Westminster
Nineteen event spaces across three floors, a 664-capacity Assembly Hall with a 30-foot glass dome, and a Westminster address that sits one minute from the tube — Church House Westminster is one of London’s largest and most versatile conference and events venues, with a wartime heritage that most purpose-built spaces can’t touch.
Designed by Sir Herbert Baker and opened by King George VI, the Grade II listed building served as the temporary home of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords during the Second World War. The first UN Security Council meeting took place here in 1945. Churchill announced the sinking of the Bismarck from the Hoare Memorial Hall stage. That history isn’t a marketing line — it’s embedded in the architecture and felt in the rooms.
The Assembly Hall at Church House Westminster
The flagship space seats 664 theatre-style, 208 cabaret, or 250 standing. Fifteen arched windows flood the hall with natural light, and the 30-foot glass dome is the architectural centrepiece. Polished English oak panelling and heraldic emblems give it gravitas without heaviness. For large conferences, AGMs, awards dinners, and fashion shows, it’s one of the few central London rooms that combines this capacity with genuine character.Church House Westminster — Hoare Memorial Hall and Supporting Spaces
The Hoare Memorial Hall takes 270 theatre-style or 250 standing, with Art Deco chandeliers, oak panelling, 6.5-metre ceilings, and a built-in stage and gallery. It suits conferences, presentations, and evening receptions at a scale just below the Assembly Hall. The Harvey Goodwin Suite on the ground floor holds 180 theatre-style with secondary-glazed windows for soundproofing, connecting via a private staircase to the Robert Runcie Room below for combined events of real scale. The Convocation Hall — which housed the House of Lords during the war — takes 100 theatre-style with a low stage and classical arch details. The Council Room offers Westminster Abbey views and seats 24 boardroom-style. Thirteen additional rooms handle everything from intimate meetings to breakout sessions, with sizes ranging from 6 to 45 guests.Technology and Production at Church House
The in-house AV team has over 20 years’ experience and won Gold at the Event Tech Awards for Most Innovative and Tech-Friendly Venue. All spaces are air-conditioned, hard-wired for connectivity, and equipped for live streaming, hybrid events, and outside broadcasts via fibre. For conferences that need broadcast-grade production without bringing in external suppliers, the in-house capability is a significant advantage.Catering by Searcys
Searcys hold the exclusive catering contract, with a Head Chef delivering seasonal British menus across formats from working breakfasts and conference catering to formal multi-course dinners. The venue achieved carbon-neutral operations in 2024 — six years ahead of target — and sustainability runs through both the building operations and the catering approach.Practical Details for Church House Events
Standard daytime hours run 08:30 to 17:00, with evening events from 18:00 to 22:00. All floors have step-free access with lifts. Five areas are licensed for weddings. Westminster tube station is one minute’s walk away, with Dean’s Yard providing a peaceful, green setting and views of Westminster Abbey that belie the central location. For events from boardroom meetings to 664-capacity conferences, Church House delivers scale, heritage, and technology in a single venue.Capacity at Church House Westminster
