About NFT1 Auditorium at BFI Southbank

BFI Southbank’s largest auditorium seats 450 in raked theatre configuration, with a 10-metre by 4.2-metre screen, a full stage, and cinema-grade technical infrastructure that has hosted some of the most significant moments in British film history. The space carries a weight of cultural association that no amount of hired-in production can replicate elsewhere — premieres, festivals, and red carpet events have passed through this auditorium for decades.

Cinema-Grade Projection and Sound in NFT1

The technical specification was designed to satisfy filmmakers, which means it comprehensively exceeds what corporate presentations require. A Christie CP4230 4K Xenon digital cinema projector handles modern formats, with laser backup for reliability. For archival and specialist screenings, 35mm, 70mm, and 16mm film projection is available, including a nitrate safety system. Audio runs through 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound with a Trinnov Ovation2 processor, output through d&b PA speakers — a combination that makes every piece of content, from keynote speeches to brand films, sound as good as it looks on a 10-metre screen. For presentations, the kit list continues: Allen & Heath SQ-6 digital mixing desk, eight wireless handheld microphones and four lavalier mics, HDMI, USB-C, and Mini DisplayPort laptop connections, Blu-ray and DVD playback via Mac Pro, and a lectern. DMX stage lighting includes a followspot for speakers. A Yamaha baby grand piano sits in the auditorium for silent film accompaniment — a detail that speaks to how deeply the BFI’s programming heritage is embedded in the room. All of this — every projector, speaker, microphone, and the services of the in-house technical team — comes included in the hire rate. The team running your event’s technical delivery works in this building every day, projecting content for the BFI’s own programme. They are not a contracted AV supplier learning your venue on the morning of the event.

Events That Belong in BFI Southbank’s NFT1

Film premieres and red carpet events are the obvious fit — the auditorium has hosted them for generations, and the BFI’s brand carries immediate credibility with industry audiences, creative sector organisations, and media companies. But the 450-seat capacity and professional presentation infrastructure serve a far wider range of formats. Conferences and AGMs benefit from cinema-quality projection on a screen that makes slides, video content, and live demos visually commanding at a scale where every seat has clear sightlines. Product launches gain institutional context — presenting in the BFI’s main auditorium positions a brand alongside cultural significance rather than anonymous conference facility. Awards ceremonies and graduation ceremonies find appropriate gravitas in the raked seating, stage, and lighting rig. Lectures and panel discussions use the stage and auditorium acoustics to create focused attention that flat-floored rooms cannot match. The auditorium has staged events for leading corporate, tech, automotive, educational, and entertainment brands. Many companies rebook repeatedly — the consistency of technical delivery and the distinctiveness of the setting create an event experience that audiences remember. Wheelchair access includes two spaces at the rear and two at the front, with a ramp to the stage. Hearing loop and infrared audio description systems are fitted throughout. Wired internet is available at the stage.

NFT1 and the Wider BFI Southbank Complex

The auditorium pairs naturally with the Riverfront restaurant and Balcony Bar for pre-event receptions, post-screening drinks, and delegate catering. The two-storey riverside space sits immediately outside NFT1 — guests walk straight out of the auditorium into a Thames-view reception area with private bar and terrace. No corridors, no venue change, no logistics. For larger or more complex programmes, NFT2 (252 seats with small stage), NFT3 (134 seats with presentation space), The Studio (38 seats for intimate screenings), the Blue Room (60–100 seated, up to 250 standing for receptions and workshops), and The Drawing Room (a hidden speakeasy-style bar behind a moveable bookcase, 16 dining or 40 standing) extend the options across the BFI Southbank complex. Full venue takeovers are available. All catering is handled by Benugo, the BFI’s in-house partner. Waterloo station is a two-minute walk, connecting to mainline rail, Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo, and Waterloo & City Underground lines. The South Bank location places events within London’s cultural quarter — National Theatre, Hayward Gallery, and Southbank Centre sit alongside.
