Full Venue Hire at Backyard Comedy Club

Backyard Comedy Club is London’s largest purpose-built comedy venue, located at 231 Cambridge Heath Road in Bethnal Green. Twenty-plus years of stand-up — hosting names from Dave Chappelle and Russell Howard to Joe Lycett and James Acaster — have soaked a particular atmosphere into the walls that purpose-built event spaces can’t replicate. For private hire, the venue offers a 300-standing-capacity main room with professional-grade PA systems, air conditioning, and the kind of lived-in character that makes guests relax the moment they walk in. The venue was rebuilt in 2013 to state-of-the-art specifications, adding modern acoustics and production infrastructure while preserving the scrappy East End personality that defines the space. Whimsical artwork, quirky installations, a pool table, foosball, darts, and board games fill the bar area — it’s a venue designed around the idea that people should enjoy being in the room, not just watching the stage.

The Main Room and Bar

The main room and its adjacent bar area combine for up to 300 standing guests. The space shifts from its intimate comedy layout to an open-plan event configuration, and the transition works because the room was designed for performance — sightlines, acoustics, and flow were built in from the start. Seated configurations are available on request, though specific seated capacities should be confirmed with the venue. The bar area is included in full venue hire and cannot be hired separately.

Sound and Production at Backyard Comedy Club

Three separate PA systems serve the venue: a dedicated comedy PA optimised for speech clarity, a main room system for music and larger events, and a bar PA for ambient sound. This level of audio infrastructure is unusual for a venue of this size and means that events requiring high-quality sound — presentations, live music, panel discussions, awards ceremonies — don’t need to bring external equipment. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

What You Can Do With the Space

The comedy club format translates naturally to a range of event types. Corporate presentations and town halls benefit from the purpose-built stage and tiered sightlines. Awards ceremonies and launch events use the performance infrastructure as-is. Social events and parties inherit the venue’s relaxed, slightly anarchic atmosphere — the games, the artwork, and the bar-area character do the work that event theming usually has to manufacture.

Practical Details for Hiring Backyard Comedy Club

The venue is fully wheelchair accessible on a single level — no lifts or stairs required. In-house food is available in the form of homemade pizzas and sides, though planners requiring more extensive catering should discuss options directly with the venue. Street parking is available on Cambridge Heath Road. Bethnal Green tube and overground stations are both two minutes’ walk away, making the venue exceptionally well-connected for an East London hire. Opening hours are Saturday and Sunday from midday, Monday to Friday from 5pm.

What Works Best Here

Backyard Comedy Club is a strong fit for corporate socials, team away-days, product launches, awards nights, and private parties where the atmosphere matters more than the décor. The comedy heritage gives the space a warmth and energy that’s difficult to fabricate, the 300 capacity handles substantial events, and the triple PA system means sound quality is handled at a level most venues this size simply don’t offer. For events that want character over convention, this is one of East London’s best options.
